Kick-off meeting in Barcelona, November 8-9th 2023

The kick-off meeting of BE-LIGHT will take place in Barcelona during the 8th and 9th of November. It will be held at the north campus of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). About 20 scientists from 7 top academic institutions (MPI, UZH, UGOE, NCU, PG, SU, UPC) and 3 internationally recognized hospitals (IMO, UMG, FSJD) will meet to review the objectives, define the procedures for recruitment as well as the planned activities during the upcoming year 2024, in addition to discuss strategies for developing collaborations.

This event will be of great importance as Europe’s leading experts in photonic techniques and machine learning algorithms will come together to start a common project that will result in major new advances in current diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.

Three major issues of concern for the health of society will be on the table: the visual impairment of certain ocular conditions and their early diagnosis (to be improved within the topic “Eye diseases and vision“), the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases (to be stopped with new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches within the topic “Cardiovascular diseases“) and the presence of unknown molecular components in different conditions like Alzheimer’s disease (to be detected with new techniques of super resolution microscopy within the topic “Advanced microscopy for the analysis of cells and tissues involved in the development of diseases“)
